Hits and misses

THE BALTIMORE SUN

On the field: Rookie pitcher Nerio Rodriguez capped his rise from Single-A with six solid innings, allowing one earned run on three hits. Rodriguez walked two and struck out four. He finished his first season in the majors with an 0-1 record and 4.32 ERA. He was a struggling catcher a little more than a season ago.

In the dugout: With nothing on the line, manager Davey Johnson gave regular starters Chris Hoiles (catcher), Roberto Alomar (second base), B. J. Surhoff (left field) and Eddie Murray (designated hitter) the day off.

In the clubhouse: Pitcher David Wells ran fully clothed into the Blue Jays shower to congratulate his pal Pat Hentgen, who won his 20th game yesterday. Hentgen and Wells live 20 yards from each other in Clearwater, Fla.
