Retired Officers' Wives plan luncheon, Christmas dinner


THE RETIRED Officers' Wives' monthly luncheon will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 1 at the Fort Meade Officers' Club.

For reservations, call the coordinator in your area by noon Thursday.

Louise Bareford, at (410) 268-0203, will take calls for the Annapolis area while Miriam Toner, (301) 262-0805, and Lucy Coghill, (410) 721-7709, will take calls for Bowie and Crofton. Lucille Simms, (301) 776-4048, will take calls in Laurel, while Mary Jane Trudell, (410) 672-0179, will take calls for Odenton and Lee Brylla, (410) 768-1469, for Glen Burnie.

The club also has scheduled a Veterans Appreciation Brunch at JTC 11: 30 a.m. Nov. 10 at the Fort Meade Officers' Club. The deadline for reservations is Nov. 7. The Christmas Dinner Ball will be held at 6: 30 p.m. Dec. 14 at the club. The deadline for reservations is Dec. 10.

Libraries offer stories

Storytime is a free program of stories, crafts and music for preschoolers. The program begins this week in all the branches of the county public library. Each session lasts about 30 minutes. Parents or caregivers must accompany 2- and 3-year-olds to Storytime sessions and are invited to join 4- to 6-year-olds as well. Registration is not required.

Children ages 3 to 5 are invited for Storytime at 9: 30 a.m. and 10: 30 a.m. Tuesdays, today through Oct. 29, at the Crofton Branch Library. The branch also invites 2- to 6-year-olds to Storytime at 7 p.m. each Thursday through Oct. 31.

At the Maryland City Branch, children ages 2 to 6 will enjoy starting their day with stories, finger plays, crafts and the hokey pokey during drop-in Storytime at 10 a.m. each Wednesday through Oct. 30. There will be a different theme every week.

The Odenton Branch Library will offer Storytime at 7 p.m. Tuesdays, this week through Oct. 29. Children ages 2 through 6 will participate in activities including silly songs, interactive stories and finger plays. Storytime is repeated at 10 a.m. each Wednesday through Oct. 30. The theme for the Oct. 29 and 30 sessions will be Halloween.

The Provinces Branch Library will provide children ages 2 through 6 with stories, crafts, and other activities at 10 a.m. Wednesdays and 7 p.m. Thursdays through Oct. 31.

Shoplifting seminar

The West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a "Stop Shoplifting" Seminar from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Oct. 8 at the Holiday Inn Laurel, 3400 Fort Meade Road.

The seminar will be presented by Officer Colmus of the Anne Arundel County Crime Prevention Unit. Other crime prevention techniques, such as the Business Watch Program, also will be discussed.

The seminar has been scheduled in October so that the information can be obtained before the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.

There is no cost to attend, but reservations are requested.
