Second-half Liberty push tops Glenelg Two goals by Ziegenfuss give win to No. 14 Lions; Girls soccer

Her back to the goal, roughly 18 yards away, it took just seconds for Liberty's Shanna Ziegenfuss to control the pass, turn right and shoot. Glenelg goalie Jamie Epperlein drove to her right but never touched it.

"Good players do good things like that," said Glenelg coach Mike Williams. "It was an excellent shot."

Ziegenfuss' goal 1: 26 into the second half gave the 14th-ranked Lions a 2-0 lead, and they controlled much of the second half en route to a 3-1 victory at Glenelg.

"That goal was huge," said Liberty coach Sam DeLaurence. "We knew that the next goal was going to be a decisive factor, and as a team, from front to back, we worked hard for that goal."

Ziegenfuss' quick first step was all it took to give her the opening she needed to score.

"I was right behind her," said Glenelg's Lauren Brown, who did a solid job of marking the All-State and All-Metro player. "She just turned a shot. It was a good shot."

Ziegenfuss scored her fifth goal of the season with 12 minutes remaining on an indirect kick from eight yards away. With almost the entire Glenelg team on the goal line in front of the net, Ziegenfuss took a tap pass from Trish Young and somehow found an opening on the left side for a 3-0 lead.

"I really wasn't aiming. I just wanted to keep it low," said Ziegenfuss.

Liberty (3-0-1) took a 1-0 lead with 3: 13 left in the first half on Kate Hannon's first goal of the season.

Heather Bereberich scored for Glenelg (1-1-1) with four minutes remaining when Liberty goalie Gina Cinquegrani was unable to clear a shot and the Gladiators' junior tapped it in.

Williams said his team "played well in spots, but not well enough to beat a team like that. We didn't show what we're capable of doing. We had some chances but didn't finish.

"But that is taking nothing away from Liberty. They earned the vTC game. They outplayed us."

They also surprised Glenelg by using a lineup that included five midfielders.

"We had some problems matching up," said Brown. "We were confused at times. They [Liberty] just played very well today."
