Working Mother magazine yesterday named three Maryland companies to its 1996 list of the "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers."
Life Technologies Inc., the Gaithersburg-based biotechnology supplier, was listed for the first time, while hotel giant Marriott International, of Bethesda, was named for the sixth year in a row.
Marriott is also basking in the glow of being named Monday by Business Week as one of the top-10 family-friendly companies. The magazine published the list in its Sept. 16 issue.
Bethesda-based Calvert Group, which operates the nation's largest family of mutual funds that invest in "socially responsible" businesses, was named to Working Mother's list of family-friendly companies for the fourth time.
The list will be published in the October issue. Companies are evaluated and selected based on their performance in four areas: Pay and benefits. Companies selected pay at or near the top of their industry and offer health and retirement plans among the best in their industry.
Opportunities for advancement. Training programs are numerous, allowing employees to learn new skills and to be promoted from within. There are specific mechanisms for advancement such as job postings and annual performance reviews.
Child care. Child care is provided on site or directly subsidized and services such as back-up child care, sick child care and the like are provided.
Family-friendly benefits. Formal programs are in place for flexible work schedules, paid leave and support of family needs at various cycles of development, and benefits are paid equally to full- and part-time employees.
The chief of publicly held Life Technologies, which manufactures and supplies products used in life science research and the commercial manufacture of genetically engineered products, said family-oriented work programs helps the company attract and retain top talent.
J. Stark Thompson, the company's chief executive officer, said, "If we have effective pay and benefits programs, we can attract the talent we need, retain them by providing growth opportunities and make them more efficient at work by supporting family needs."
