On the field: The Orioles tried to minimize the damage done by Frank Thomas in a three-game series last month, walking him six times in 15 plate appearances, and they continued to do that last night. With runners at second and third and nobody out in the very first inning, Orioles manager Davey Johnson ordered David Wells to intentionally walk Thomas.
In the dugout: B. J. Surhoff, bothered by pain in his lower back, was in the starting lineup yesterday for the first time in four games. Surhoff's back had become so painful that he received a shot Monday for relief. Johnson didn't expect him to play for another few days, but Surhoff started in left field and went 2-for-4.
In the clubhouse: "It wasn't a bad pitch. It was more of a tip-your-cap-to-him pitch." -- White Sox starter Kevin Tapani on Rafael Palmeiro's homer.
