IRE receives patent on secure modem

Information Resource Engineering Inc. said yesterday that it has received a patent on its new secure portable modem, a product the company said will promote telecommuting by making it easier for stay-at-home workers to affordably scramble transmissions to their offices.

"Organizations are giving these products to their employees in order to make remote access to their computer network quick, easy and secure -- thereby enabling business use of the Internet," IRE Chief Executive Anthony Caputo said.

The company said its new patent covers technology that uses digital signatures to identify a user to a computer network. It also scrambles data that move between a company's system and an outside computer.

The technology will compete with other solutions based on its convenient size and cost-effectiveness. Caputo said the new device will lead to ever smaller and less-expensive encryption devices.

White Marsh-based IRE is a fast-growing developer of hardware-based computer security devices that had sales of $8.4 million in the first half of this year. Its stock climbed $1 to $16 yesterday on the news.
