Hits and misses

On the field: Brady Anderson was hit by a Justin Thompson fastball in the second inning, the 20th time this year Anderson's been hit by a pitch. That tied the club record, set by Bobby Grich in 1974, and tied the AL record for left-handed batters, set by Harry Gessler of the Washington Nats in 1911.

In the dugout: The Orioles had runners on second and third and nobody out in the third inning, leading 4-0. Pete Incaviglia grounded back to Thompson, who looked the runners back and threw to first. Then Tigers manager Buddy Bell ordered an intentional walk of Eddie Murray to load the bases. Thompson made the strategy work by striking out Chris Hoiles and Bill Ripken.

In the clubhouse: "I made it home, but it's been tiring. The flight got home about 11: 30 a.m. [Thursday]. I slept a little bit, but I didn't want to sleep all day. It's been really tough. The flying really wears you out." -- Davey Johnson, on the Orioles' travel.
