For most students and their parents, the school year starts with a rush to buy the necessary supplies and containers to hold them. But some families may find it difficult to afford all of the equipment their youngsters need for class.
So the West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce is launching a drive to collect school supplies from its members and distribute them to schools in Gambrills, Odenton, Severn, Jessup and other areas in the western part of the county.
"We wanted to choose a project that would really help the students and an educational project, because that is a major focus in our community affairs committee," said Marcia Hall, executive director of the chamber.
Chamber members can bring their donations, anything from pencils to calculators, to the chamber's Business Connection mixer Sept. 26 at model homes in the Russett community, or drop them off at the chamber office, 8373 Piney Orchard Parkway, Suite 100, Odenton, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The drive will conclude Oct. 24 at the chamber's 35th annual Meet Your Neighbor/Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon at the Ramada Hotel BWI Airport.
Unlike elsewhere in Anne Arundel, the west county area had no group to organize a large drive for school supplies, according to Sherry Yaniga, coordinator of business partnerships in the school system.
"It's really helpful when businesses pitch in," Yaniga said. "All students probably need the same things, everything from the backpack to carry it in to loose-leaf paper to pads and pencils and rulers, glue sticks, you name it."
Though the school year will be well under way by the time the drive ends, Yaniga said the supplies can be used throughout the year as items wear out.
Barbara San Gabino, principal of Odenton Elementary School, said she would welcome an infusion of donated school supplies.
"Our student population has grown so much that we can always use that kind of help," San Gabino said.
