Vision and hearing technicians from the county health department and school nurses have scheduled vision and hearing screenings in public and private schools in the county through September.
The screenings are required by state law for children in preschool, kindergarten, third and eighth grades, and for students new to county schools, private schools, nursery schools and day care programs. They are designed to detect vision and hearing problems that might impair a child's ability to do well in school.
Parents will be notified by mail of any problems.
Special-education students who receive speech therapy also may be recommended for screening. Children who wear glasses should bring them to school the day of the screenings.
The screenings will be:
Sept. 9 and 10, Kiddie Academy and St. Margaret's Learning Center.
Sept. 11, St. Martin's-in-the-Field.
Sept. 11 and 12, St. Andrew's Church.
Sept. 12 and 13, Open Door Christian School.
Sept. 16, Edgewater Elementary.
Sept. 16 and 17, Crofton Elementary and Anne Arundel County College Child Development.
Sept. 17, Central Elementary.
Sept. 18, Ruth Eason Special School.
Sept. 18 and 19, Play and Learn Community Place and Crofton Middle School.
Sept. 20, Maryland City Elementary.
Sept. 23 and 24, Central Special School, Key School, Maryland City Elementary and Crofton Woods Elementary.
Sept. 25, Waugh Chapel Elementary, Faith Baptist Church, Calvary Chapel Christian Academy.
Sept. 25 and 26, Manor View Elementary.
Sept. 26, Old Mill Christian Academy and Arundel Middle School.
Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, Harman Elementary and Crofton Meadows Elementary.
