Mid-Atlantic baseball tourney in Taneytown this weekend

Two hundred baseball players from the mid-Atlantic will demonstrate their talents for college and professional scouts at a Labor Day weekend tournament in Taneytown.

Tournament players are boys ages 16 to 18 who have been chosen in tryouts for teams sponsored by major league clubs or local organizations. Featured will be the Oriolanders, a team sponsored by the Baltimore Orioles.

Games start at 5 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday and 11 a.m. Monday. Each team will play six or seven games during the weekend, with games scheduled all day Saturday and Sunday. Two games are scheduled Monday.

The tournament will be held at Taneytown Memorial Park and is open to the public. No admission will be charged.

This is the first year the tournament has been held in Taneytown, said Mike Stonesifer, a Taneytown resident and father of one of the players. His son Vince, 16, a junior at Francis Scott Key High School, is one of two local boys in the tournament. The other is Wes Peters, 15, a sophomore at Liberty High School.
