Hits and misses

THE BALTIMORE SUN

On the field: B. J. Surhoff ripped a long drive to right with Cal Ripken on first in the third inning, and as right fielder Matt Stairs and center fielder Ernie Young converged, the ball bounced off the warning track and off the face of one of the fans in the front row and back onto the field. Ripken and Surhoff circled the bases, thinking the ball was still in play, but the umpires ruled -- correctly, as replay would show -- that Surhoff's hit was a ground-rule double.

In the dugout: Orioles manager Davey Johnson has settled on a platoon of the left-handed-hitting Brent Bowers and right-handed-hitting Mike Devereaux in left field. "It's tough putting Devo in there [starting]," said Johnson, "because he's so good coming off the bench."

In the clubhouse: "He was overthrowing his slider before. That was causing his arm problems. He knows not to do that now. He's gotten better with that." -- Johnson, on reliever Armando Benitez, who was activated before last night's game.
