The new elementary school being built in Fulton likely will be named Fulton Elementary School, Howard school officials announced last week.
The name was recommended to the Howard County school board Thursday night by a committee of parents and school officials. The school is being built off Route 216 near Lime Kiln Road and Murphy Road.
The board will hold a public hearing on the proposed name Sept. 24 and will vote on it Oct. 10.
Fulton, one of Howard's smallest villages, developed in the 1800s as a crossroads community to provide services to area farmers. It was named for Charles C. Fulton, a former editor of The Sun, school officials said.
Other names considered by the committee included Pindell School, Scaggsville, Alice B. Wilson, Fulton Fields, Fulton Acres, Fulton Springs, Lakeview and Lakeside.
The $7.4 million school is scheduled to open in fall 1997. It will have a capacity of 564 students.
