Suicide victim is identified as Fulton man, 31

Police have identified the western Howard County man who used a 20-gauge shotgun to kill himself Tuesday on the lawn of the Maryland City fire station.

Christopher Paul Ammon, 31, of the 8300 block of Reservoir Road in Fulton was pronounced dead at the scene in Anne Arundel County.

Police and fire officials said the man walked onto the rear lawn of the station on Laurel Fort Meade Road about noon, leaned onto the barrel of his gun and pulled the trigger.

His body muffled the sound of the shotgun blast, officials said.

A firefighter who drove up to the station mistook the body for a mannequin.

Two firefighters who went to investigate the scene thought Ammon was a sunbather because he was wearing sunglasses and lay spread-eagle on the lawn.

It was only after they noticed an engraved gun between his legs and a bullet hole in his shirt that they realized the man had committed suicide.

They checked his pulse, but he was dead.

Fire officials said they believe the man sat in the woods behind the fire station drinking a bottle of Coca-Cola and smoking a pack of cigarettes before he shot himself.

They found those items in the woods about 50 yards from the body.
