Taneytown gets state grant for sewage project

Taneytown has received a $50,000 state grant to help pay for a $4.1 million project to improve and upgrade its troubled sewage treatment system.

The grant was approved by the state Board of Public Works last week.

The money will be used for the planning and design of a system to remove nitrogen from the treated effluent the town discharges into Piney Creek.

Nitrogen helps stimulate algae blooms in water.

The $50,000 grant is the first of $815,000 in grants Taneytown expects to receive for the treatment system.

Construction on the plant improvements will begin in January and will be completed by January 1998.
