Pull it back
The hair message for fall is up and away from the face. Coils, twists, loosely piled and spiky. Try a high ponytail or a classic chignon, or simply pin it up with a barrette and let the ends fan out. It's a hair trend that feels new, working with every look for fall. But you don't have to wait for the leaves to turn -- these do's are sleek and practical for late summer's heat. Hair by Janice Kinigopoulos/T.H.E. Artist Agency.
Slick nylon, Lurex knits, shimmery silks and glowing velvets are making luxury part of the everyday. These metallics aren't glitzy or gaudy; their cut is simple and clean. Pair with matte fabrics or go for head-to-toe glow. One sure bet for a fall staple -- the glossy silk shirt. Wear it alone, unbuttoned at the neck, or under a lean jacket. Shown, silk shirt by Mel & Lisa at Ruth Shaw, $95. Modeled by Ria Snyder/3 West Casting.
Soon it will be time to put away your naturals and nudes and start thinking patterned hose and opaque tights. The textured leg slips into the open shoe with a sculpted heel. Shoes are strappy -- an updated maryjane, an ankle strap, a T-strap. Go for layered looks, pulling an open weave over a colorful pair of tights, or stick with a sophisticated texture in a rich fall color. Shown here: Richard Tyler maryjane, $280 at Joanna Gray, with Classiques Entier tights, $10 at Nordstrom.
The fragrance counters have some welcome new additions. Versace's Blonde is a fresh, floral-based fragrance with the scents of tuberose, green violet, daffodil and jasmine. The bottle is adorned with the house's signature Medusa emblem and can be found at Parfumerie Douglas.
Allure by Chanel has the warmth of classic perfumery, paired with water lily, Italian citron and magnolia. From Christian Dior comes the fruity and floral Dolce Vita, which is already a hit in Europe. Find both luxurious new fragrances at Nordstrom.
Designer Tommy Hilfiger is launching into the women's market and leading the way with the appropriate scent, called tommy girl. It's a young hip scent -- as clean as its pared-down packaging. Available in October at Hecht's.
The scent of things to come ... Liz Claiborne's Curve, Elizabeth Arden's 5th Avenue and, rumor has it, something new from Donna Karan, all to debut early this fall.
