Fu's second diving win puts China near sweep American Moses barely misses springboard medal; ATLANTA OLYMPICS

ATLANTA -- China's Fu Mingxia became the first woman to win both the platform and springboard diving competition at the Olympics since 1960 with her gold-medal performance in the springboard competition last night, and moved her country one step closer to a sweep of the four diving events at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.

The last to sweep the two women's events was Ingrid Kramer of Germany. Fu entered last night's final ranked third, but overtook morning leader Irina Lashko of Russia and had the competition all but wrapped up after her fourth attempt -- a reverse 2 1/2 somersault. China's Ni Xiong won the men's springboard on Monday and the Chinese men are favored to win the platform tomorrow.

Lashko held on to win the silver medal. American Melisa Moses finished fourth, two points behind bronze medalist Anne Pelletier of Canada.

"I was a little frustrated to finish fourth and be so close," said Moses, of Orange Park, Fla., "but I'm happy at the same time. I have a lot of mixed emotions, but this has been an incredible experience."

Fellow American Jenny Keim, who has been diving with a sore back, also reached the final yesterday, but ranked eighth after the morning rounds and did not make a serious bid for a medal. She ended up in ninth place.

Moses entered the final round ranked sixth and closed to fourth after her third dive, but the relatively low degree of difficulty of her last two scheduled attempts left her at a significant disadvantage. She was one of four divers within six points of the bronze entering her final dive.

It left her to wonder what might have been, though she did not come into the competition as a strong medal favorite. The bronze medal would have been considered a solid finish.

"I can't help but think it might have been different if I had done this or that, or trained a little harder," Moses said.
