Practice backstroke, get a tan this summer at area's pools

SUMMER IS FOR the backstroke, and it's anyone's guess whether that's best done while afloat in water or on one's back on a lounge while pleasantly being basted with cocoa butter. For either version, it's time to visit a local pool.

The largest North Carroll pool facility is in Manchester, where the Lineboro-Manchester Lions Club swimming pool committee opens two pools next to Christmas Tree Park every day.

In line with the "break-even" philosophy -- and providing swimming as a community service -- season passes for individuals and families will be reduced starting Monday to $60 for individuals, $100 for families of two and $120 for families of three or more.

The season of swimming lessons will be completed this week.

Weekday admission for those without season passes is $4 for those 13 and older and $2 for those 12 and under.

The pool is open Saturdays from noon to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is $4.50 for those 13 and older and $2.25 for those 12 and under.

More swimming lessons

Swimming lessons will be offered at the Hampstead Municipal Pool starting Monday.

The 30-minute lessons will be taught by Red Cross-certified instructors. The cost is $30 for ages 4 and up. Classes last two weeks.

Daily admission to this quiet neighborhood pool is $4 for ages 12 and older, $2 for those 11 and under and those over 60. Children 4 and under are admitted free.

The pool is open daily from noon to 8 p.m.

Memberships are $90 for individuals and $180 for families. Weekend memberships are $50 for individuals and $100 for families. Senior citizens receive a 10 percent discount.

Not wrinkled enough?

Swimming lessons are offered all summer at Four Seasons Sports Complex, 2710 Hampstead-Mexico Road. You may register for any of three two-week sessions, which cost $35 each and last for half an hour between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. or between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Swimming is taught by Red Cross-certified instructors.

Testing for class placement is held the Saturday before each session. The next session will be from Monday to July 25. Testing will be from 9: 30 a.m. to noon Saturday.

There also will be sessions July 29-Aug. 8 and, for morning sessions only, Aug. 12-22.

Classes for parents with children 18 months through 3 years old, in which parent and child enter the water, will be offered at the next two sessions. Adult lessons, for beginners and swimmers seeking to refine their skills, also will be offered.

There is no daily admission to the pool. Summer memberships are available for individuals, $175; for couples, $200; for families, $225; and for students, $100.
