Drivers of two stolen cars led a Howard County police officer on a high-speed chase in Ellicott City on Wednesday that ended when they drove in different directions and one vehicle crashed.
One of the two men who fled the wrecked car was arrested after a foot chase. The other occupant of that car and the driver of the second stolen car eluded police.
The chase began after Cpl. Jeffery Ferra stopped to offer help to three men standing beside a 1984 Mazda RX-7 and 1994 Honda Passport parked on northbound U.S. 29 near U.S. 40. As he approached, the men jumped into the cars and sped away.
Ferra followed the two cars on U.S. 40 at speeds reaching 80 mph until the cars split up, with the Mazda heading toward Baltimore County and the Honda turning onto Normandy Drive.
He pursued the Honda -- which had two flat tires -- until it crashed at Knoll Circle.
Steven Parker, 21, of Catonsville was arrested at the Town and Country apartment complex on West Springs Drive and charged with possession of cocaine, destruction of property and auto theft. He was being held yesterday in lieu of $5,000 bail at the Howard County Detention Center.
Both cars were stolen Wednesday -- the Mazda from the parking lot of The Mall in Columbia and the Honda in Baltimore County.
Police do not have a detailed description of the man driving the Mazda.
