Film student rewarded for animation


Zachary Lehman, a native of Baltimore, received a gold medal in the animation category of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' 23rd Annual Student Academy Awards competition in Beverly Hills. Lehman also received a trophy and a check for $2,000.

Lehman, a Dartmouth College student, was among 11 film students from nine colleges and universities who received the award from Oscar winners Kevin Spacey and John Lasseter.

Senior contest

Entries are being accepted for the NYLCare Senior Expo photo and sketch contest. Winning artwork will appear in the 1997 calendar and resource handbook that will be distributed at the expo.

Photographs and sketches, which must be black and white and 8 1/2 -by-11 inches in size, can be entered in three categories -- scenic views, pets or people. Judging is based on photographic content, suitability for enlargement for the calendar and quality of the picture. In addition to appearing in the calendar, winning entries will be displayed at the 10th Annual Senior Expo, Oct. 9-10, at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium.

All entries should be mailed by Aug. 5 to the Baltimore County Department of Aging, 611 Central Ave., Towson 21204.

Literary premiere

The Baltimore Review, a new literary magazine sponsored by the Baltimore Writers' Alliance to showcase fiction and poetry, is accepting submissions for its December 1996 premiere issue.

Work will be considered in various lengths, forms and subjects. Just have something to say, say it in an original way, and say it well. A cover letter is appreciated, but not required. Orchestra needs helpers

The Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra needs volunteers from September to June to assist with orchestra and administrative operations, development, publicity, volunteer training and recruitment.

Volunteer days, times and tasks are flexible.

The CYSO is also looking for support from local businesses for printing, copying, construction work, displays, accounting and office supplies.

Volunteers have been the heart and soul of the orchestra since it was founded in 1990, to give promising area music students, ages 8 to 18, an opportunity to rehearse and perform orchestral literature at the highest level under the direction of professional conductors. The orchestra has 150 members in three ensembles -- symphony, repertory and string. Call (410) 647-7494.

Art League scholarships

The Maryland Art League Inc., a nonprofit organization of more than 100 Maryland artists, has awarded a $1,000 Maryland Art League Scholarship to Ryan Hoge of Towson and a $200 Dorothy Sorgen Memorial Scholarship to Heather Haggstrom of Columbia.

Both students are majoring in art at Loyola College.

Art classes

The Columbia Arts Center, located in Long Reach Village, is offering summer art classes for children and adults.

Beginning and intermediate Oriental brush painting for students in grades four through nine is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and for adults from 6: 30 p.m. to 8: 30 p.m. Tuesdays, June 25 through July 30.

A class on the potter's wheel is being offered for ages 12 through 16 from 5: 30 p.m. to 6: 30 p.m. July 22-26. The session will include throwing techniques and basic wheel skills. Previous clay experience is required.

An introduction to watercolor for adults is scheduled from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, June 26 to Aug. 14. Participants will learn bTC a variety of watercolor concepts and skills.

Performers ages 4 through 18 are needed for the Timonium Dinner Theatre's children's production of "The Wizard of Oz." Auditions for children who can sing, dance and act will be held at 5: 30 p.m. July 1 at the theater, 9603 Deereco Road. The musical will run Sept. 14 through Dec. 28. Call (410) 560-1113.

Auditions for the Bowie Community Theatre's production of the Tony award-winning play "The Shadow Box" will be held at 7: 30 p.m. July 1-2 at the Bowie Playhouse, Whitemarsh Park, Route 3. Roles are open for three males, ages 20s to 50s; one teen-age male; four females, ages 30s to 70s, and voice-only of the interviewer, male or female. Call (410) 956-6421.

Theatre Therese will hold auditions for the musical "Plain and Fancy" at 7 p.m. June 30 and July 1 at the Shrine of the Little Flower School, 2800 Brandan Ave. Roles are open for adults, teens and children. Harford Community College's Harford Dance Theatre is conducting open auditions for its 1996 production of "Harriet's Happiest Halloween" today in the Susquehanna Center on campus, Thomas Run Road in Bel Air.
