Survey focuses on school crowding

The Southern Regional Citizens Advisory Committee is surveying south county residents to find the area's preferences for coping with crowding at Southern Middle School.

New construction, for which PTAs and the citizens' group are lobbying, would take several years if approved, and families say they want to work with the school system to examine other options. Southern Middle, with a state-rated capacity of 897 students, is expected to have 1,032 students this fall.

Survey responses should be mailed to the school by Friday.

The four options to relieve overcrowding are split sessions, moving the eighth grade into Southern High School, year-round schooling, and redistricting a region that would include Central Middle School, where there is room for more students.
