Handle at spring meet down slightly In-state wagering drops 12 percent

Pimlico Race Course's spring meeting, which boasts the showcase events of the Maryland racing season, showed a slight decline in handle from 1995 yesterday.

Overall, the drop was only about 1 percent with all types of wagering considered, including Maryland betting on out-of-state racing and out-of-state wagers on Maryland racing.

"But there is a trend that continues to disturb me," said Maryland Jockey Club president Joe De Francis. "That is the Maryland wagering on the Maryland card. It is off about another 12 percent."

That is the second straight steep decrease in the exclusively in-state numbers, which have fallen from an average of $1,150,000 daily two years ago to $884,750 this spring.

"I think the Delaware situation [competition from slots] can't help those figures," said De Francis. "Our racing by and large was pretty good at this meeting, but not as good as it could be because of that factor."

Turkish Tryst last to first

The longest shot in the field, Turkish Tryst, came zooming through the lane under Mario Verge yesterday and won the last stakes race of the meet, the $30,000-added April Run.

Turkish Tryst went from last to first for owner-trainer Michael Moran to score her third turf victory, by a half-length over Theycallmecharlie.

The winner was timed in 2 minutes, 29 2/5 seconds for 1 1/2 miles over a grass course that was beginning to take moisture from the rain.

Prado takes jockey title

Edgar Prado easily won the jockey's competition during the meet with 73 winners, 28 more than runner-up Larry Reynolds.

Dale Capuano nudged King Leatherbury for the trainer's title, 30-26.

Capuano's sent out 120 entries, giving him a winning percentage of 25. The leader in that category was Graham Motion, who had 18 winners in 58 entries (31 percent).

Olmo gets first victory

Apprentice rider Eugene Olmo Jr., 27, scored his first victory on favored Seductabuck in the third race yesterday. It was his fourth mount since he earned his license.
