On the field: Roberto Alomar singled with two out in the first inning, extending his hitting streak to 14 games -- and promptly was picked off first by Mariners lefty Sterling Hitchcock. Albert Belle has had the longest hitting streak in the majors this year, 21 games, and if Alomar gets a hit in every game for the next month and a half, he'll approach Joe DiMaggio's all-time record of 56 straight games with at least one hit.
In the dugout: Giving Jeffrey Hammonds a day off, Orioles manager Davey Johnson inserted Mark Smith into the starting lineup, for the first time in six days. Smith, called up from Triple-A Rochester earlier this month, is hitting .200 with a homer and three RBIs in five games.
In the clubhouse: "[Rocky] Coppinger's not that far away, I don't think Alvie Shepherd's that far away, [Calvin] Maduro might be a year or so away. I don't think it make senses to give up those guys who are pitching to get pitching." -- Orioles general manager Pat Gillick, on the organization's minor-league pitching.
