Use lemon oil polish on furniture. Silicone-based polishes break down and soften the finish.

Avoid yearly housecleaning tasks. Try cleaning one room at a time on a rotational basis.

When buying a window air conditioner for a south or west window, be sure it has an extra 1,000 Btu. The sun will put an extra strain on the unit.

Sprinkle salt onto oven spills right away. Cleanup will be easier.

Looking for wall studs before hanging a picture? Run an electric razor along the wall to determine where the studs are. The buzzer's tone will change when it hits a solid surface.

Before frosting a cake, slide narrow strips of wax paper beneath the edges of the cake. Excess icing will drip onto the paper, rather than the plate.

In the garden

Mulch around trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetables. This will retain moisture and control weeds.
