Two men who were transporting 37 illegal immigrants through Maryland when their rental truck crashed near a Chesapeake Bay Bridge toll plaza in February were sentenced to four months in federal prison yesterday.
U.S. District Judge Andre M. Davis also ordered that the men -- Luis Hernandez-Herrera of Guatemala and Hermelindo Velasquez Rivera of Mexico -- be deported after serving their time. A third man who pleaded guilty in the case, Israel Perez Herrera, is scheduled to be sentenced Friday.
The three men took turns driving a rental truck loaded with immigrants from Arizona to the Eastern Shore, where the immigrants were promised work. The trip ended Feb. 7 at the Bay Bridge when the truck crashed into a car at the toll booth and the men were arrested by federal agents.
