Lorne Smith named Ivy rookie of week for Princeton lacrosse

Lorne Smith (Gilman) has wasted little time making his presence felt in Princeton lacrosse.

The freshman attackman was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week for the third time in the season's first five weeks after scoring two goals against Penn and three against Brown, both Princeton victories.


At Dickinson, Julie Martin (Garrison Forest) scored four goals on nine shots in a win over Haverford and Jenny Lund (John Carroll) had a season-high five points in a win over Drew. Martin has 14 goals this season, Lund 12.

At Mary Washington, Bill McLean (Towson) is the men's No. 2 scorer with 20 points and Charlotte Cockrell (Glenelg) is the women's No. 2 scorer with 24.


Freshman Marty Jakovics (Calvert Hall) made 17 saves while playing the final three periods in Lynchburg's win over Shenandoah.


Greg Kessler (Randallstown) was named Rider's Male Athlete of the Month after winning the 126-pound championship in the East Coast Wrestling Championships and winning two bouts at the NCAAs. . . . Melanie Vogel (Institute of Notre Dame), senior guard and captain, finished her Buffalo career tied for third in games (110) and second in free throw percentage (72.2). . . . James Madison's Randy Frederick (Wilde Lake), the Virginia all-around champion, qualified in the rings and parallel bars for the NCAA East Region Championships. . . . Phil Dixon (St. Frances) was named Division III News Player of the Year after averaging 22.5 points and 9.6 assists and leading Shenandoah to an 18-8 record. . . . Freshman Jenny Chuasiriporn (Notre Dame Prep) shot a final-round 78 for a 224 total and fifth place to help Duke finish runner-up in the Duke Spring Invitational. . . . Freshman Orlando Ranson (St. Frances), who led New Hampshire College in scoring (16.0) and assists (6.2), was named Division II Rookie of the Year by the New England 'D Basketball Coaches Association.
