The looks

Sleek, shiny and bare was the unofficial dress code for women at the 68th Academy awards ceremony last night. Pale, shimmery fabrics in white, silver or blue were the norm, with several standout gowns in brown satin, but not for actress Sharon Stone. Departing from the predictable fashion again this year, she covered up in a black mockturtleneck and black velvet coat. The men showed their fashion flair with elongated jackets, distinctive vests (Mel Gibson wore his family's Buchanan tartan under his black Armani tux) and bowties (Robin Williams tied a lace bow under his wing collar).

Emma Thompson was one of several who opted for a Giorgio Armani design, wearing a cream beaded cardigan with cream silk skirt. Others include Best Actress winner Mira Sorvino in a silver beaded bustier with organza skirt.

Clockwise from above, Pierce Brosnan sported a black six-button double-breasted tuxedo from Giorgio Armani. Companion Keely Shaye Smith chose an Armani white beaded gown. Tom Cruise opted for a high-buttoned jacket and shirt with shaped collar while wife Nicole Kidman donned a pastel blue empire dress from Prada. Brad Pitt gave a nod to the '70s trend with his shirt collar spread outside his jacket collar, while Gwyneth Paltrow wore the dress of the evening -- pale, bare and form-fitting. Sharon Stone, beneath her black velvet coat, wore a short-sleeved, form-fitting mock turtleneck.
