Islanders' King breaks jaw

THE BALTIMORE SUN

New York Islanders left wing Derek King likely will miss the rest of the season after he suffered a broken jaw and a concussion in yesterday's 7-5 loss to the Winnipeg Jets.

King, who was to undergo surgery to repair his jaw last night at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y., was skating right to left as he crossed the Winnipeg blue line in the final minute of the first period. Moments after he passed the puck to Zigmund Palffy, King was checked by Jets center Dallas Drake. King, 29, apparently was knocked unconscious by the hit and fell limply to the ice.

He is the fifth Islander to suffer a concussion this season, joining Brett Lindros, Dennis Vaske, Ken Belanger and Palffy. Lindros, Vaske and Belanger remain sidelined.
