A Taneytown man was sentenced to 18 months behind bars Tuesday after being convicted Monday of intimidating a former girlfriend who had filed a complaint against him in July.

James Joseph Ellis, 47, also was found guilty of battery, assault and being intoxicated while creating a disturbance. Circuit Judge Francis M. Arnold sentenced him to five years and suspended all but 18 months.

Prosecutors said Ellis of the 4300 block of Old Taneytown Road went to the former girlfriend's house in October to try to persuade her to drop the complaint. When she refused, he attacked her, prosecutors said.

Union Bridge: An employee of M. R. Pfoutz and Sons Inc. on Union Bridge Road reported to state police Monday that someone twisted the copper tubing line on a propane tank until it broke between noon Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday. He estimated the damage at $600.
