The driver of a van with only three wheels led county police on a chase through Severna Park Sunday, setting off small fires as sparks flew from a spinning brake drum scraping on the pavement.
The chase ended at the home of Raymond Harry Rigler in the 600 block of Kensington Ave. Officer Ross Passman tackled Mr. Rigler, 36, as he ran from his van toward his house, struggled with him and arrested him, police said. Mr. Rigler was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving with a suspended license and leaving the scene of an accident.
Police said the chase began at Jumpers Hole and Benfield roads shortly before 5 p.m. when a red 1988 Ford van traveling south plowed into the rear end of one car that was sitting at a red light, pushing it into the path of another. The van sped onto Benfield Road with the other cars in pursuit. At some point, the right front wheel came off the van.
The chase led onto Lynwood Drive, Kinder Road and back to Jumpers Hole Road, where the van hit another car, police said, and continued east on Benfield Road, then north on Kensington.
