Woman, 81, killed as car, pickup collide


An 81-year-old Eldersburg woman was killed Sunday night when her husband pulled in front of another vehicle while trying to merge onto Route 26.

Police said William James Whitely, 80, was turning left from Old Liberty Road onto Route 26 about 5:20 p.m. Sunday when his 1994 Buick LeSabre was struck by a 1988 Ford pickup traveling east.

Mr. Whitely failed to yield the right of way to Jeffrey Todd Fisher, 29, of the 5900 block of Oakland Road in Sykesville, police said. Mr. Fisher was not injured.

Mr. Whitely of the 6600 block of Sweet Air Lane was in serious but stable condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center last night. His wife, Grace Irene Whitely, died at the trauma center.
