The alternatives to 'Homicide'

Outside of "Homicide: Life on the Street," is there anything good to watch on Friday nights? Let's see.

* "Home Improvement" (7 p.m.-7:30 p.m., WBFF, Channel 45) -- Tim fears he won't exactly shine as a ballroom dancer. Not hard to believe, when your teacher is legendary hoofer Ann Miller.

* "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" (8 p.m.-9 p.m., WDCA, Channel 20) -- Herc, tired of competitions where someone dies, comes up with something tamer and invents the Olympics. So, (( he's the one we have to blame

* "The X-Files" (9 p.m.-10 p.m., WBFF, Channel 45) -- Mulder finally gets proof that a UFO has been recovered. Or does he? Fox.

* "Singin' In the Rain" (10 p.m.-11:40 p.m., repeats 11:40 p.m.-1:20 a.m., MPT, Channels 22 and 67) -- There's not a down moment in this, the greatest of all the great MGM musicals. Gene Kelly was never better, and Donald O'Connor almost steals the show with his athletic "Be A Clown." But then that nasty storm starts, and Kelly dances his way into legend.

DTC * "Late Show with David Letterman" (11:35 p.m.-12:35 a.m., WJZ, Channel 13) -- Lois Lane herself, Teri Hatcher, visits Dave's world. So, what is it like being married to Superman?

* "Cleopatra" (2 p.m.-4 p.m., AMC) -- For my money, Claudette Colbert made a much better Cleopatra than Elizabeth Taylor. Sexier, too. This 1934 epic from Cecil B. De Mille may seem a bit stodgy, but don't switch the channel. You'll have a good time.

* "Demi Moore Uncut" (8:30 p.m.-9 p.m., E!) -- Don't miss this if you're a Demi fan. Here's lots of video, lots of interviews and plenty of people talking about what a great star she is.

* "The Breakfast Club" (10:05 p.m.-12:15 a.m., TBS) -- If you can get past Judd Nelson, who was never in a movie where he couldn't overact, this film holds up pretty well. Ten years ago, of course, it was the definition of hip. It's still an entertaining look at the unusual chemistry that can develop between high schoolers.
