Laurel motel struck by bandit for second time in four days

A masked man robbed the Laurel Motel 6 on Monday of an undisclosed amount of money, the second holdup in four days, county police said.

A man wearing a brown knit cap pulled down over his face with eye holes cut out walked into the motel in the 3500 block of Old Annapolis Road shortly after 5:30 p.m. He approached the counter, implied that he had a gun and demanded cash from the clerk and the manager, police said.

The clerk complied and the man ran away, police said.

On Friday, an unarmed man in a burgundy ski mask robbed the motel about 7 p.m.

The bandit demanded money and when the clerk hesitated, he repeated his demand and threatened to hurt the clerk, police said. The clerk handed over money and the man ran away.

Severn woman arrested on child abuse charge

A Severn woman was arrested and her child-care license suspended after a mother reported that her child had been harshly beaten with a belt at the woman's house, county police said.

Wanda Virginia Adams, 34, of the 1800 block of Dove Court was charged with child abuse.

The 4-year-old Severn boy was treated at North Arundel Hospital.

The boy's mother called police about 7 p.m. Thursday after she picked her child up from the child-care provider's house and examined the abrasions on the back of both the boy's thighs, police said.

Both police and the mother thought the wounds indicated that the child was beaten harshly, police said. When police talked to the day-care provider, she admitted that she got angry at the child and she beat him with a belt, police said.
