Loyola rally falls short vs. Fairfield, 71-68

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Greg Francis scored 19 points to help Fairfield hold off a late Loyola rally, 71-68, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game last night.

Loyola cut a 16-point lead to one in the final 6:20 but couldn't go ahead.

The Stags (14-7, 6-3) have won three straight to move into second place in the league.

Mike Powell scored 31 for Loyola (8-12, 5-4) and has 116 points in his past four games.

It was the second straight game that Powell has scored over 30 points.

After Francis missed two free throws, the Greyhounds gained possession with a chance to take the lead in the final 20 seconds, but the ball was stolen from Powell, and Fairfield put the game away with free throws.

Trailing 59-43 with 6:20 left, the Greyhounds went on a 22-7 run to cut the lead to 66-65 with 1:06 remaining.

Loyola starting forward Nsilo Abraham left the game in the first half with an injury and did not return.
