Bob Turk joins bingo callers for benefit


Bob Turk, weatherman for WJZ-TV, has been added to the lineup of celebrity bingo callers for the Handel Choir of Baltimore's "Beethoven, Bach & Bingo Island Extravaganza," to be held at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Harbor Court Hotel on Light Street.

The event, which will benefit the Handel Choir, will feature a tropical dinner by award-winning master chef Holly Forbes, followed by 11 rounds of beach blanket bingo for fabulous prizes, including the grand prize -- a trip for two to an island paradise.

Other celebrity bingo callers include Sylvia Badger, a columnist for The Sun; Sandie Nagle of the Baltimore Jewish Times; former Baltimore City Council President Mary Pat Clarke; and WQSR's Eddie Applefeld.

Tickets are $60 a person; bingo is $1 per card for games one through 10 and $5 per card for the grand prize game. All contributions are tax-deductible. Call (410) 366-6544.

Artist to speak

Watercolorist Frederick Schuler Briggs will speak at the Maryland Art League meeting, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Catonsville Senior Center, 501 N. Rolling Road.

Mr. Briggs, a graduate of the Maryland Institute, College of Art, was an illustrator at the Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.

He now teaches at the Schuler School of Fine Arts. Call (410) 668-1925.

Dancer to give classes

Doug Varone, Goucher College modern dance guest artist-in-residence, will conduct open master classes Feb. 25 through March 14 in the Todd Dance Studio on the college campus.

Classes are open to area high school dancers with high-intermediate to advanced skills. The cost for each session is $10.

Mr. Varone has taught extensively throughout the world, and, in addition to conducting master classes and workshops on tour, he regularly is on the faculty of major dance festivals in the United States.

He has choreographed extensively for the theater, television and film, and for the past three seasons, he has conceptualized and choreographed designer Geoffrey Beene's Couture Fashion Ballets in New York City.

Acting workshop

The Fell's Point Corner Theatre will offer an eight-week beginning acting workshop from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Feb. 20 at the theater, 251 S. Ann St.

Participants will learn the basics of acting -- relaxation, improvisation, sense and emotion memory, and voice.

An eight-week scene study workshop is planned for late April. Participants will concentrate on developing a character from an existing play using the basics learned in "Beginning Acting."

Barry Feinstein, an award-winning director and teacher, will lead both workshops.

Merely Players Inc. will conduct three drama workshops for ages 7 through adult at Baldwin Hall, Route 178 in Millersville.

Nan Howard, an illusion consultant, will lead the first workshop, "Creative Costume and Makeup," from noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 24. "Auditioning for Musical Theater" will be offered by Kathy Nolet from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. March 2. And Dawn Shoop will present "Creative Movement and Improvisations" from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on March 3.
