UMBC halts five-game skid


Junior guard Tori Moten scored a season-high 16 points, including 7-for-8 from the free-throw line in overtime last night, as UMBC ended a five-game losing streak and defeated visiting Charleston Southern, 72-66, in a Big South Conference game.

Charleston Southern (7-13, 2-6) opened a 60-58 lead in overtime, but Jen Gloyd hit a three-pointer, forward Lisa Cicak made two free throws and freshman center Monica Logan hit a short turnaround jumper to give UMBC (8-12, 5-4) a 65-62 lead with 1:22 remaining.

Then Moten made five of her next six free throws and the Retrievers defense held Charleston Southern to a three-pointer and a free throw in the final 2:13 to seal the win.

* Manhattan 74, Loyola 71: Gina Somma scored a game-high 27 points to help Manhattan (12-9, 7-2) beat host Loyola (10-11, 4-5) in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game.

Lynn Albert and Mary Ann Kirsch each scored 15 points for the Greyhounds.

* New Hampshire 71, Towson State 63: Sheila Danker scored 19 to pace New Hampshire (11-10, 8-5) over visiting Towson State (5-16, 3-11) in a North Atlantic Conference game. Courtney Baugh had 13 points for Towson, making three three-pointers.
