Glen Burnie man injured in crash on U.S. 1

A Glen Burnie man was seriously injured yesterday after a van collided with a truck on U.S. 1 in Elkridge, causing a pileup that also included a car and a tractor- trailer, Howard County police said.

Manuel Perez of the 500 block of McPherson Road in Glen Burnie was flown by state police helicopter to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was in fair condition yesterday evening, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The driver of the van, Brian Smith of the 6600 block of Glen Barr Court in Baltimore, and the truck driver, Stephen Miller of the 1500 block of Chapman Road, Crofton, were taken to Howard County General Hospital, where they were in stable condition last night, police said.

According to police, Mr. Smith was driving his 1992 Chevrolet Astro van north on U.S. 1 near Kit Kat Road about 11:20 a.m. when he ran into the rear of Mr. Miller's 1995 Dodge truck, which was stopped and waiting to turn left into a shopping center.

The truck was forced into the southbound lanes and was struck by Mr. Perez's 1984 Audi. About the same time, a northbound tractor-trailer, driven by Thomas McMahon of the 2900 block of Singerly Road, Elkton, struck the van, police said.
