Gianandrea Gavazzeni, 86, composer, musician and a former artistic director of Milan's La Scala opera house, died yesterday at his home in northern Italy, his family said.
Mr. Gavazzeni, who had been ill for several months, began his career as a pianist and composer and wrote copiously for 20 years. He began working with La Scala in 1948 and served as its artistic director from 1966-1968.
He conducted all the greats in theaters throughout Italy and wrote guides to the operas of Mozart, Wagner and others.
George E. Wallace, 83, a former curator of the insect and spider collection at Carnegie Institute's Museum of Natural History, died Wednesday in Mars, Pa. He oversaw an expansion of the invertebrate collection and his specialty was the chalcid, a parasitic wasp.
Antonio Ruiz Soler, 74, one of Spain's most respected and popular flamenco dancers, died yesterday in Madrid, Spain. National radio quoted relatives as saying he died from a stroke. Known in the 1950s and 1960s as "El Bailarin" (The Dancer), he capped a lifetime of awards in 1992 when he received Spain's Fine Arts Gold Medal from King Juan Carlos.
Brodrick Haldane, 83, a high-born Scot and photographer who started his 65-year career with a snapshot of a countess and went on to photograph such subjects as Marlene Dietrich and Louis Armstrong, died Saturday at a hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland. He had cancer but his death came after a fall at his home.
Julian Samora, 75, a Hispanic author and educator who helped found the National Council of La Raza, died Friday in Albuquerque, N.M. He taught at Notre Dame and Michigan State, where the Julian Samora Research Institute is located. In 1968, he co-founded the National Council of La Raza, to reduce poverty and discrimination in the Hispanic community.
Beth Amos, 80, a stage and screen veteran whose credits include the movies "Police Academy" and "Canadian Bacon," died Wednesday while watching a production at a theater she loved in Toronto. She was in the audience of Henrik Ibsen's "The Master Builder" at the Royal Alexandra Theater.
