Annapolis city police were searching for an Arnold man who escaped -- in handcuffs -- from an officer outside Anne Arundel District Court early yesterday, authorities said.
Enrico Terenna Green, 26, arrested on drug and assault charges Wednesday night, had just been denied bond and was to be driven to the county detention center about 5:15 a.m. when he broke away, said police Cpl. Greg Kirchner.
Still in handcuffs, Mr. Green ran down a driveway, across Herbert Sachs Drive behind the District Court Building and disappeared into a grove of trees. He remained at large last night, police said. Annapolis police officers had a picture of Mr. Green in their cruisers, and patrol platoons were searching for him, the corporal said.
Police said Mr. Green of the 600 block of Southern Hills Drive was arrested after police found crack cocaine in his rear pants pocket during a routine traffic stop about 10 p.m. Wednesday outside the District Court Building on Taylor Avenue. They alleged that he tried to fight, and had to be subdued by five officers.
Mr. Green was charged with assaulting officers and possession with intent to distribute illegal drugs, police said.
"I think we need to find him, but I don't think he is a threat to citizens," said Corporal Kirchner. "Basically, if you see him, call the police. Don't approach him yourself."
Authorities described Mr. Green as black, 5 feet 9 inches and 165 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes and a mustache and beard. He was last seen wearing a green camouflage jacket, black pants and brown work boots.
