Independence Bowl

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Michigan State (6-4-1) vs. Louisiana State (6-4-1)

Site: Shreveport, La.

Time: 5:30 p.m.

TV: ESPN

Line: LSU by 6 1/2

Players to watch:

Tony Banks, Michigan State: The senior quarterback missed three games with an ankle injury but still threw for 1,741 yards, eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 62.4 percent of his passes.

Kevin Faulk, LSU: The most highly recruited running back in high school last season averaged 85.2 yards in seven starts.

Best win:

Michigan State 28, Michigan 25: Without this upset of the Wolverines in the ninth game of the season, the Spartans would be staying home for the holidays.

LSU 28, Arkansas 0: A season-ending shutout of the Southeastern Conference West champs gave LSU its first winning season since 1988 and its first bowl bid since the 1989 Hall of Fame Bowl.

Outlook: Since losing quarterback Jamie Howard to an injury, the Tigers have counted on their defense to win games. The Spartans are prone to turnovers, having been picked off 18 times and finished eighth in the Big Ten with a minus-1 turnover margin. Michigan State gets the edge in a close game; it's 4-1-1 in games decided by six or fewer points.
