For Steinheim, Wesley, one for books

It was a record-breaking season for Wesley's football team, and for Brandon Steinheim (Chesapeake) in particular.

Wesley broke or tied 28 school records and was one of only two teams in Division III in the top 10 in both total offense and defense. Steinheim, a junior tailback, was named to Football Gazette's Division III All-America first team after breaking a batch of Wesley records, including touchdowns in a season (17). He tied a Division III mark with 10 consecutive 100-yard rushing games.


* Junior Lawrence Worthington (Edgewood) set a Liberty record for touchdowns in a season (16) and ranked 12th in NCAA Division I-AA in scoring (8.73 points a game). Teammate Damon Bomar (Edgewood), a junior linebacker, was Liberty's third-leading tackler with 60. . . . Peter Cline (Towson), a defensive back and special teams member, finished with 10 tackles for 8-1 Beloit.



Senior guard and co-captain Kwame Evans (Southern-BC), the Atlantic 10 Conference's leading scorer last season (19.4 ppg), paces George Washington after six games with a 17.2 figure. . . . Freshman Annetta Davis (St. Mary's) made her first start for Syracuse and had two points and six rebounds in a win over Vermont. She's averaging 5.2 points and 5.2 rebounds. . . . Virginia Wesleyan senior sixth man Gene Pleyo (Northeast-AA) scored a career-high 21 points in a win over Roanoke. . . . Junior Kia Damon (Western) is Millersville's No. 3 scorer (9.8 ppg) and is 7-for-7 on three-pointers.

York junior Chad Barr (Oakland Mills) is the Capital Athletic Conference's leading free-throw shooter with 25 of 28 (89.3 percent). Senior captain Billy Simmons (C. Milton Wright) is York's No. 2 scorer (12.6). . . . In the win over UMES, Georgetown got a game-high six assists from Kimberly Smith (Western) and a team-high nine rebounds from Kacy Williams (Hammond). . . . Sophomore Christina Williamson (Mercy) is averaging 5.7 points and 5.0 rebounds off the bench for Susquehanna. . . . Freshman Garth Timoll (St. Paul's) is averaging 2.6 points as a Bates reserve.


Syracuse's Matt Slutzky (Aberdeen) lost his first match but won his next two to place third at 142 pounds in the Eastern Invitational. . . . Sophomore 177-pounder Kevin Neville (Mount St. Joseph) contributed a win in the 26-22 victory over the Coast Guard Academy. . . . In the 12-team Sheridan tournament, James Madison's Chip Cochran (Annapolis, Army), placed sixth at 142 pounds.


Matt Brickley (Mount St. Joseph) qualified for the Division III swimming championships on Rowan's 400-yard medley relay team. . . . Kara Jackson (Fallston), a junior halfback, was a key reserve in Bates' 8-6 field hockey season.
