'96 Terps schedule includes Aug. start, Ga. Tech on ESPN

THE BALTIMORE SUN

The Atlantic Coast Conference released the 1996 football schedule yesterday, and it includes a couple of firsts for Maryland.

The Terps have their first-ever game in August, the opener on Aug. 31 at Byrd Stadium against Northern Illinois.

The next week, the Terps play host to Alabama-Birmingham, which will be in its first season in Division I-A.

The home schedule concludes Nov. 14 against Georgia Tech, a Thursday night game that will be televised on ESPN.

The other home dates are against North Carolina State and Wake Forest.

It is Florida State's turn to come to College Park, but last summer athletic director Debbie Yow negotiated to take that game to Joe Robbie Stadium.

Yow conservatively estimated that Maryland could net $300,000 more than if the game had been played at Byrd Stadium.

Minus a name attraction like the Seminoles, however, the Terps most likely will be unable to match last year's average home attendance of 42,121.
