A Jessup man was arrested Friday and charged with resisting arrest after he allegedly punched and kicked an officer and ran from the scene of an accident, county police said.
Officer Kevin Mont was investigating an accident involving a stolen car at the intersection of Hog Neck and Fort Smallwood roads shortly before 12:30 a.m. Friday. He broadcast a description of two suspects during his investigation, police said.
Officer Ervin Lemaster saw two men fitting the description hiding behind a pickup truck parked outside Chet's Bar in the 7900 block of Elizabeth Road, police said. When the officer began to approach, the men ran into the woods nearby.
Officer Lemaster tackled one of the men and the other escaped through a hole in a fence. As Officer Lemaster tried to handcuff the suspect, the man punched and kicked him, police said.
The officer fought back and hit the suspect on the left cheek with his flashlight. After the fight, the suspect ran deeper into the woods, police said. Officer Lemaster chased him, but tripped over a stump. Cpl. Darryl W. Gray caught the suspect a few minutes later, police said.
James Alton Davis Jr., 24, of the 7800 block of Clark Road was charged with car theft, malicious destruction of property, assault on police, battery and resisting arrest.
