Five arrested in barroom beating

Five people were arrested early Monday and charged with beating a Laurel man during a barroom fight, county police said.

Witnesses told police that Jose Pablo Hernandez, 52, was leaving the Starting Gate Bar in the 3400 block of Fort Meade Road in Laurel when he got into an argument with another patron, who hit him on the head with a beer bottle.

Mr. Hernandez staggered outside and fell. The man and four friends continued to beat him, witnesses said.

One witness called police. An off-duty officer stopped five assailants as they tried to drive away.

Mr. Hernandez was kept overnight at Greater Laurel Beltsville General Hospital and released.

Charged with battery were Edward Charles Moyer, 37, of the 8100 block of Spaulding Circle in Severn; Dawn Marie Dempsey, 25, and Michael Bernard Nelligan Jr., 27, both of the first block of Fort Meade Road in Laurel; and Alinsa Lavone Nelligan, 26, and Rene Paul Maisonneuve, 38, both of the 200 block of Brock Bridge Road in Laurel. All were released on their own recognizance at a bail review hearing yesterday.
