Archie Wannamaker, a standout running back at Mount St. Joseph, has been charged with burglarizing a Baltimore County home, police said.
Wannamaker, 18, a record-setting running back and a potential All-Metro Player of the Year, was arrested Nov. 5 by Baltimore County police, who allege he broke into a home in the Randallstown area. He was charged with first-degree burglary and malicious destruction of property, according to court records.
Mount St. Joseph football coach Mike Working would not comment. The school's president, Charles Rider, said in a statement:
"It is our understanding that Archie Wannamaker, a Mount St. Joseph senior, was arrested and charged with breaking and entering. He was later released in the custody of his legal guardians. Archie Wannamaker has been a satisfactory student and made extraordinary athletic achievements this season at Mount St. Joe.
"In our investigation of this incident, Archie was treated like any other student accused of seriously violating the law. He was suspended temporarily from classes and all school activities as a result of this incident."
Police and court records said that Wannamaker and another man, Demond Hamlin, 20, were arrested after a brief chase by police, who were investigating a report of a burglary.
Hamlin was charged with first-degree burglary, destruction of property and possession of drug paraphernalia -- namely, glassine bags typically used to package cocaine, police said.
After being held overnight at the Garrison Precinct, Wannamaker was released the next day on $5,000 bail, and Hamlin on $10,000.
Wannamaker is scheduled to appear for a hearing on Nov. 29. The maximum penalty for burglary, a felony, is 20 years in prison, said Kevin Novak, a county police spokesman. For malicious destruction, the maximums are a fine of up to $500 and 60 days in jail.
Hamlin also faces a fine of not more than $500 for the possession charge.
Wannamaker, of the 7900 block of Jody Knoll Road in Woodlawn, and Hamlin, 20, of the 6700 block of Townbrook Drive in Woodlawn, were arrested at 10 p.m. near an apartment complex in Randallstown.
Wannamaker was benched during then-No. 1 Mount St. Joseph's 37-21 loss to Loyola on Saturday.
The week before playing Loyola, Wannamaker had established single-game state records for rushing yards (368) and touchdowns (seven) in a 53-18 victory over City.
Several colleges have expressed interest in Wannamaker, who ranked second at the end of the regular season among area rushers and scorers with 1,731 yards and 33 touchdowns in nine games. Among the colleges expressing interest are Virginia, Duke, West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Rutgers.
