The University of Maryland College Park is accepting applications from pianists ages 18 to 33 who wish to compete in the 1996 William Kapell International Piano Competition and Festival.
The competition will be held July 18-26 on the College Park campus and July 27 at Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore. The winner of the first prize will receive $20,000 plus a solo recital at New York's Lincoln Center. Total prizes for the competition exceed $50,000.
The piano festival will run July 20-27 on the College Park campus, with members of the competition jury and other artists participating. The festival marks the finale of UMCP's Rossborough Festival, a summer-long celebration of the arts.

Artscape literary prizes
Literary organizations, presses, arts councils and nonprofit theaters in Maryland are invited to submit nominations for the Artscape '96 Literary Arts Awards for poetry, short story and one-act play. The winner for each category will then be selected by an outstanding artist in the field.
Each organization is permitted to nominate one writer from each of the three categories. Nonprofit theaters are eligible to nominate for the one-act play award only. The deadline for

Towson State University's Opera Workshop will present selected scenes from Moore's "The Ballad of Baby Doe," Massenet's "Manon" and "Cendrillon," and Verdi's "Falstaff" at 8:15 p.m. Nov. 17-18 in the school's Stephens Hall Theatre, 7900 York Road.
