Towson State (5-3) at American International (1-6)
Time: 12:30 p.m.
Site: John Homer Miller Stadium, Springfield, Mass.
Radio: WTMD (89.7 FM)
Outlook: Towson State is looking to clinch its third straight winning season under coach Gordy Combs. The Tigers committed six turnovers and were penalized 12 times last week, but still came away a big winner, 34-14, over Robert Morris. The Tigers out-gained the Colonials, 411 yards to 142, and freshman QB Kevin Smith threw for 237 yards and three touchdowns. American International is coming off a 27-17 loss to Springfield. The Yellow Jackets are making their first home appearance since Sept. 16. Towson leads the series, 3-1, including last year's 48-6 victory.
Maryland (5-3) at N.C. State (2-5)
Site: Carter-Finley Stadium, Raleigh, N.C., 1 p.m.
Radio: WBAL (1090 AM)
Outlook: The Wolfpack (1-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference) has beaten only Duke and Division I-AA Marshall, but they'll draw a sellout and the Terps (3-2 ACC) will have to step up in front of the most hostile crowd to greet them this season. Maryland is 2-2 on the road. Senior QB Scott Milanovich will start over Brian Cummings, and try to regain the form that has made him Maryland's most prolific passer. CB A. J. Johnson, the ACC interception leader, will miss the first half for his ejection from last week's 31-0 loss at Louisville. Sophomore TB Tremayne Stephens (611 yards) had 131 in last year's 47-45 win over the Terps. Maryland, which has lost three of its past four, must win to keep alive its bowl hopes.
Bowie State (3-6) at New Haven (7-0-1)
Time: 1 p.m.
Site: Robert Dodds Field, West Haven, Conn.
Outlook: Bowie fell to 2-5 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association with last weekend's 6-3 upset loss to previously winless Fayetteville State. The Bulldogs were victimized by a fake field-goal try with 40 seconds left that Fayetteville turned into a 24-yard touchdown pass. Bowie State's defense allowed just four completions and 185 total yards, but the Bulldogs' only points came on a 24-yard field goal by Danny Lewis. New Haven, which blew out Knoxville last week, 50-0, has one blemish on its record -- a 36-36 tie with West Chester.
Catholic (4-2-1) at Salisbury State (5-2)
Time: 1 p.m.
Site: Sea Gull Stadium, Salisbury
Outlook: Salisbury's five-game winning streak ended at Bethany last weekend, 24-21, as Daron Wimbish was tackled on Bethany's 1-yard line on fourth down with 1:04 left. Senior David Doy completed 29 of 38 passes for 266 yards and ran for a touchdown. This is the Sea Gulls' homecoming. They lead this series 2-1, but the Cardinals won last year, 41-16. Catholic edged Ursinus last week, 21-20.
Morgan State (1-7) at Samford (5-3)
Time: 1 p.m.
Site: Seibert Stadium, Birmingham, Ala.
Radio: WEAA (88.9 FM)
Outlook: The Bears are 0-5 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference after last weekend's 47-9 loss at Florida A&M.; Michael Moore threw for 385 yards and one touchdown, a MEAC-record 99-yard completion to Otis Covington. But the hosts ran for 304 yards and held Morgan State to minus-29, avenging last year's upset loss to the Bears. Moore needs 340 passing yards to break his own single-season record of 2,129. This is Morgan's first trip to Birmingham, and its second game against Samford. Last year, the Bears lost, 40-34, at home despite gaining 560 total yards. Samford, which began the year 4-0, is coming off a 20-9 win over Alcorn State.
Waynesburg (4-4) at Frostburg State (5-3)
Time: 1 p.m.
Site: Bobcat Stadium, Frostburg
Radio: WFRB (560 AM)
Outlook: Frostburg State won in typical fashion last week, by running over its opponent, Ferrum, 21-6. The Bobcats rushed for yards and their defense came up with three interceptions and a fumble recovery. Freshman QB Domenic Novak ran for 110 yards, scored twice and earned ECAC Rookie of the Week honors. Waynesburg defeated Kenyon last weekend, 32-3, and holds a 20-8 series lead over Frostburg.
Navy (3-4) at No. 8 Notre Dame (7-2)
Time: 1:30 p.m.
Site: Notre Dame Stadium, South Bend, Ind.
TV/Radio: Chs. 11, 4/WWLG (1360 AM)
Outlook: Navy hasn't won this matchup since 1963, when quarterback Roger Staubach led the Midshipmen, a stretch of 31 straight losses. If Notre Dame wins today, it will tie Oklahoma's 32-year dominance of Kansas State for consecutive wins over one opponent in an uninterrupted series. It will take a flawless game -- and some luck -- for the Mids to stay with Notre Dame. The Irish, who saved their season by beating Southern Cal and Boston College the past two weeks, can clinch a berth in the Bowl Alliance with two more wins and a Top 10 ranking. The two teams they've lost to -- Northwestern and Ohio State -- are a combined 15-1. The Mids will start Chris McCoy at quarterback, but Ben Fay also is likely to play. FB Omar Nelson, who missed the 20-14 victory over Villanova with a groin muscle pull, is back to split time with Tim Cannada, who became the first Navy RB in three years to rush for 100 yards (108).
Western Maryland (4-3-1) at Swarthmore (4-4)
Time: 1:30 p.m.
Site: Isaac H. Clothier Stadium, Swarthmore, Pa.
Outlook: Western Maryland broke a three-game winless streak last week by scoring two touchdowns in the final three minutes TTC to defeat Lebanon Valley, 27-13. QB Brian Van Deusen went 23-of-31 for 256 yards, passed for three touchdowns and ran for another. He set Centennial Conference career records with 6,803 passing yards and 6,671 total yards. Swarthmore was beaten by Franklin & Marshall last weekend, 42-22.
Franklin and Marshall (5-3) at Johns Hopkins (6-2)
Time: 1:30 p.m.
Site: Homewood Field
Outlook: Two fourth-quarter touchdown passes by backup Jim Guzzo weren't enough to prevent a 17-14 loss at Dickinson last weekend, ending Johns Hopkins' winning streak at six games. The loss dropped Hopkins into a three-way tie for first place in the Centennial Conference with Dickinson and Franklin and Marshall; each is 4-1. Franklin and Marshall routed Swarthmore last week, 42-22, and leads the series with Hopkins, 31-13-2.
