Naval officer from Carroll serving in Unitas mission

Navy Lt. Cmdr. Katherine E. Stefansson, daughter of Katherine L. Stuart of Hampstead, is midway through a six-month South American deployment while serving with the commander of the U.S. South Atlantic Force aboard the destroyer USS Comte De Grasse.

Commander Stefansson is on the staff of the commander in charge of coordinating and organizing all U.S. Navy operations in the South Atlantic Ocean and the waters near South America.

Along with other sailors and Marines, she is participating in Unitas '95, a multicultural exercise that began off the coast of Puerto Rico and is continuing around South America.

Unitas is Latin for unity.

Commander Stefansson's ship is one of seven U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships participating in the exercise.

She joined the Navy in March 1983 and has a bachelor of science degree from Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kan.
