Lions Club holds 45th charter fete


The Hampstead Lions Club held its 45th charter celebration Oct. 17 at Piney Branch Golf and Country Club.

District Governor David Smith congratulated the two remaining charter members, Harry Clagett and Richard Matthews, for organizing the Lions Club in Hampstead.

Mr. Smith inducted three new members into the Lions, Seth Shipley, Bryant Mann and Mike Wheeler. Perfect-attendance pins were awarded and a 40-year pin was given to Joseph Murray.

The Lions continue to recycle aluminum cans to help maintain the community park. Lions sell one-pound Benson fruitcakes for $3. They are available from any Lions Club member or at True Value Hardware, next to the post office.

Proceeds go to community projects.

N. Carroll marching band wins third place at contest

The North Carroll High School Panthers marching band wound up its competition season Saturday at the Big Apple Tournament of Bands at Musselman High School, Bunker Hill, W.Va.

The Panthers scored 75 and earned third place and the best music award in Group 1 bands of up to 35 musicians. The band's music included "Marada," "A Night in Tunisia" and "Firebird."


Hampstead: Hampstead engines responded to wires on fire in the 800 block of S. Main St. at 2:42 p.m. Friday. Units were out for 11 minutes.

Manchester:Manchester: Manchester engines responded to a brush fire near the intersection of Routes 30 and 27 at 10:46 p.m. Sunday. Units were out for 25 minutes.
