Howard County's newest elementary school probably will be named Ilchester Elementary School.
A committee of parents and school officials recommended the name to the Howard County school board last Thursday, saying it had widespread support in the community.
The school, being built on Ilchester Road near the Trinity School in Ellicott City, is scheduled to open next fall to relieve crowding at other elementary schools in the northeastern portion of the county.
"The name acknowledges the community and the history," said Alice W. Haskins, the county's middle school instructional director and chairwoman of the name committee. "The overwhelming majority of letters" recommended the school name, she said.
The committee solicited possible names from the community in the fall and received many suggestions, Ms. Haskins said. Some of the names rejected by the committee included Ilchester Woods, Patapsco, Patapsco River and Strawberry Fields.
The area along Ilchester Road apparently was settled in 1772 under the name the Village of Ilchester, Lorri Roth, a parent member of the committee, told the board. The area had its own small post office until the mid-1980s.
The board will hold a public hearing on the recommended name at its Nov. 9 meeting and will vote on the name Nov. 21.
