Second MAPGA Challenge Cup set this week

The Central Chapter will be the defending champion when the second annual Middle Atlantic PGA/TaylorMade Chapter Challenge Cup is held Wednesday and Thursday at the Tides Inn in Irvington, Va.

Each of the three 20-player teams is chosen from among the leaders on the final points list, Senior points' leaders, Women's championship, Assistants' championship, and Section and Chapter officers.

Points will be awarded on the basis of play in four separate nine-hole competitions: betterball and foursomes the first day over the Golden Eagle Course; two-player scramble and individual stroke play the second day over the Tartan Course.

9-Hole Inter-Club

Keren Packo of Rolling Road Golf Club, who won the Tournament of Champions over her own course with a score of 51 and was the year's overall points leader, was among the champions honored at the 9-Hole Inter-Club's 45th annual awards luncheon at the Catonsville club Friday.

Team honors are divided into two divisions, based on season-long play as five-player and eight-player squads. The George Taylor Trophy (five players) was presented to Hillendale Country Club by Eleanor Taylor, the donor's widow, and the Brooklawn Trophy (eight players) went to Maryland Golf and Country Club.

For the recent season, dedicated to the memory of George Taylor, a golf writer for Baltimore newspapers for parts of five decades, Sparrows Point CC won the Runner-up Trophy in the Taylor division.

The participants in the Tournament of Club champions:

Sally Anthony, Baltimore CC; Ava Wyler, Bonnie View CC; runner-up Alice Gibbs, Chartwell CC; Helen VanVeen, Chestnut Ridge CC; Marty Reid, CC Maryland; Cathy Mason, Eagle's Nest; Jeanne Krug, Hillendale CC; Tucky Dinning, Hunt Valley GC; Connie Beckwith, Maryland Golf; champion Keren Packo, Rolling Road GC; Jeannine Wagner, Sparrows Point CC; Pat Wessel, Turf Valley CC; Leslie Goldman, Woodholme CC.

A four-member team from Rolling Road Golf Club placed fourth in the recent national charity tournament for the American Cancer Society in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Qualifying for the event was the Maryland champion team of Joan Winchester, Paula Sovero, Kenya Chintrisna and Sue Sosnowski. Their two-day rounds of 71-67138 left them two shots out of second place in the select field.

Challedon management

One of the area's under-construction courses, The Links at Challedon, in Mount Airy, has retained Billy Casper Management Inc. to provide complete services.

The upscale, daily-fee facility, scheduled to open next May, will feature an 18-hole golf course, practice area, and full-service clubhouse. At its longest, the course will play at 6,900 yards.
